What is Flexible Cystoscopy?

Flexible cystoscopy is a type of cystoscopy used to examine the bladder and urethra. It is performed with a flexible cystoscope device and causes less discomfort than standard (rigid) cystoscopy. It is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia, especially in outpatient clinic conditions.

How is Flexible Cystoscopy Used?

  • Flexible Device: The flexible cystoscope is bendable and can enter the bladder through the urethra more easily, helping the patient to feel less discomfort during the procedure.
  • Local Anesthesia: Usually a local anesthetic gel is applied to the urethra. This numbs the area and makes the procedure more comfortable.
  • Procedure: The cystoscope is inserted through the urethra and reaches the bladder. The doctor examines the inside of the bladder on a monitor using a small camera at the end of the device.
  • Duration: The procedure usually takes 10-15 minutes and does not require hospitalization.

Why is Flexible Cystoscopy Performed?

  • Examination of bladder tumors or lesions
  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)
  • Detection of urinary tract obstructions
  • The cause of chronic urinary tract infections
  • Difficulty or pain during urination

Advantages of Flexible Cystoscopy

  • Less Discomfort: Thanks to its flexible structure, it causes less pain and discomfort than rigid cystoscopy.
  • Can be Performed in Outpatient Clinic: Since it does not require general anesthesia, it can be applied as an outpatient treatment.
  • Fast Recovery: The recovery process after the procedure is fast; patients can return to their normal activities in a short time.

Flexible Cystoscopy Risks and Side Effects

  • Mild risk of urinary tract infection
  • Temporary burning or discomfort when urinating
  • Rarely, minor trauma to the bladder or urethra

Flexible cystoscopy is a comfortable and safe method of examination for most patients, and is especially commonly used to diagnose recurrent bladder problems.
